With a large chasm in the ground, the sheer scale of the Vav is remarkable in terms of size, the profusion of sculptures and the quality of workmanship. It has seven levels of stairs, a multitude of sculptural panels and three columned multilevel pavilions that buttress the walls against the earth’s enormous pressure. Built by King Chandra of the Nikhumbh Dynasty to facilitate people with year-round water supply and relief from the scorching sun of Rajasthan. The Chand Baori also served as a venue for religious festivals and performing arts. The precise geometric steps cascade down to the sacred waters to a marveling depth of about 30 m. One artifact amongst the many ruins in the royal enclosure is the ‘Pushkarni’ named Hale Kalyani. The perfect square shape of this Pushkarni has the exact same steps on all four sides which can be disorienting from within. But at ground level, there is an open granite aqueduct that transports water from the nearby Tungbhadra River to the Pushkarni. They then lined the inside using layers of dressed granite slabs creating a simple yet intriguing texture throughout. The primary approach to the water is through a wide staircase which reaches the cool and comforting shelter of a two storey mantapa, the roof of the mantapa is also the bridge which marks the approach to the temple. The builders to make the groundwater available throughout the year and lined the insides with layers of granite. The sacred interrelation of temples and water sources has been seen throughout the Indian culture. In Muskina Bavi this relation has been taken to another level by tying the two together. The subtle offsets within the layers of granite forming steps in some places while a battered wall in others interspersed by shrines put together an intriguing play of shadows cast on the walls of the The date of its construction is speculated over three centuries, but the leading theory is that it was built by Thakur Janak Singh in the 18th century. At ground level, there is 86-pillared loggia on three sides of the stepwell which had provided respite to travellers fromthe scorching desert sun, reminiscent of a modern-day inn. The heavy stone walls and the depth of the well are a testament to the volume of water that can be stored in this Bawdi. Strategically placed archways and offset walls are great examples of a deep architectural understanding of the builders. One must accomplish a descent of about 200 steps to reach the water source.
