These are excavations that often descend down five to seven stories. Once inside, the mind takes in the intelligent configurations of stairs, landings, galleries, interior balconies and underground chambers; the telescoping views, towering pavilions and the powerful dance of light and shadow is absolutely captivating. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAccustomed to looking up at architecture, rarely do we see structures with sublime engineering, craftsmanship and masonry going downwards. These magnificent structures have been an indispensable part of several Indian civilisations. Built by members of the ruling class, wealthy merchants or landowners, these were designed to store and replenish groundwater. During their glory days there would be peacocks dancing on the walls, noises of laughing children playing in abandon by the steps, and singing women as they went to collect water, creating a beautiful sanctum of happiness away from the scorching heat of the tropical landscapes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the now sleepy village of Abhaneri, is this daunting kund which boasts of a fascinating complex of galleries, graceful arches and multi-tiered terraces. Built by King Chandra of the Nikhumbh Dynasty to facilitate people with year-round water supply and relief from the scorching sun of Rajasthan. The Chand Baori also served as a venue for religious festivals and performing arts. The precise geometric steps cascade down to the sacred waters to a marveling depth of about 30 m. The earliest style dates back to the Nikumbh Dynasty; the upper palatial structure was added during the rule of the Chauhans and the arched colonnade on the outer periphery was added by the Mughals. The Baori boasts of thirteen vertiginous levels organized like a box within a box, plunging to an emerald green pool watched over by pillared loggias,arches, brackets, terraces and niches with carved Hindu deities.
